Pachacuti Yupanqui conducted a well-planned series of campaigns against neighboring tribes between [M 007 / 1438 and 1463], with the sole aim of being the creation of an [G 11 / Inca] Empire. He first subdued the tribes within 20 miles of Cuzco, including the Aymarca, the Cuyo and the towns of Ollantay-tambo, Cugma, Huata, Huancara and Toguaro. Then Pachacuti quickly captured most of the mountain provinces covering a large area around Cuzco. Once these areas had been consolidated, he took the lower Urubamba valley and Vilcapampa to the north.
Pachacuti sent his brother, Capac Yupanqui, to fight against the Tarma, Huanca and Angara tribes north of Cuzco. He succeeded in subduing them and incorporated their territories into the empire. Capac Yupanqui was named after the fifth Inca emperor, which may account for the chronicler's confusion attributing the fifth emperor with these important additions to the Inca Empire.
The Inca army was expanded and strengthened with new recruits each time they conquered a tribe. They in turn were used to conquer the next tribe. Often some of the conquered people were taken from their native area and replaced with a more assimilated people to prevent them banding together and rebelling against the Inca. Finally, Pachacuti crushed the Lupaca tribe near Lake Titicaca and the Chumpivilca, south of Cuzco.
